About the Composer
Born in Derby, England in 1955, Nikola
Resanovic is of Serbian heritage
and has lived in the United States since 1966 - becoming a naturalized
citizen in 1976. He is a graduate of the University of Akron, School of
Music (BM,
MM Theory/Composition) where he studied composition with David
Bernstein,
voice with Rodney Miller and piano with Douglas Hicks and Marion Lott,
and
the Cleveland Institute
of Music
(DMA Composition
1981) where he studied composition with Donald Erb, piano with Olga
Radosavljevich,
and electro-acoustic music technology with David Peelle. His Compositions include
works for orchestra
and
solo with orchestra, symphonic band, and numerous chamber ensemble and
electro-acoustic
compositions which have been internationally performed.
Dr. Resanovic has worked extensively with the sacred chant of
the Serbian
Orthodox Church and has composed several
volumes of choral liturgical music. In addition, his secular choral
rhapsodies-featuring the music of the former Yugoslavia-have been
performed by Serbian choral societies
thoughout the United States and Canada. His works have been
performed
by the Cleveland Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony, Ukraine's Odessa
Philharmonic Orchestra, Toledo Symphony,
Greater-Palm
Beach Symphony, Akron Symphony, Mansfield Symphony, Lima Symphony,
Tuscarawas Philharmonic Orchestra,
Cleveland
Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Akron Youth Symphony, The Contemporary Youth
Orchestra,
Cleveland Orchestra Trio, Coryton Ensemble, Solaris wind quintet,
Paragon
Brass Quintet, Chicago Brass Choir, Etesian wind quintet, the Prairie
Winds,
the Burle Marx Trio, the Crescent Duo and numerous individual
performing artists.
His music has been heard in hundreds of concerts and festivals
throughout the
United States, in Canada and throughout the world in Great Britain,
Holland, Germany, Belgium,
Austria, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Finland, Sweden, China, Japan,
Hong-Kong,
Israel, Australia, Brazil, Greece, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia.
Awarded the 2003
Cleveland
Arts Prize in Music for his achievements in music composition,
Nikola Resanovic was appointed chair of the Liturgical Music
committee of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America
(2004-present).
He is a member of BMI
,the Society
for
Composers Inc. and the Cleveland
Composers
Guild. He presently resides in Akron, Ohio and is a
Professor of Music at the University
of Akron, School of Music where,
in
addition to directing the school's newly relocated and renovated
Electronic Music Facility which he
designed and
implemented, he teaches Music Composition and Theory.
